2009 Season Clips
First week in camp, 4-28-09. Bailey and I got to camp approximately 5:30 PM. Lots of snow on the lane and needed the 4X4 to get through. The main pool of Trout Creek still 2/3rds ice. Some Loons, ducks and robins are already here. Oh, who’s Bailey? She is my new blonde! She doesn’t work like the older one does, but quite sure most of you will like her.
Week 2 – Pike in the grass spawning. The 7th of May we are able to get to ½ mile rock. The snow is all but gone. The first swallows are here and so are the mosquitoes!! About 55 to 60 degrees today. The 8th we had a skiff of snow. It just made the ground white. I can see water to Airport Bay.
5-16-09 – Still lots of hard ice on the main lake. Roy went out to his cabin on the 15th and couldn’t get back because the ice moved. Water lines were all froze to the cabins. One break under cabin 1. The wind has blown hard and cold for the last 4 days. Forecasted heavy snow tonight. Fishing is good, but not hot yet. 5-17-09 had approximately 1” of snow overnight. About 20 to 30 mph north winds. Water lines froze again, didn’t get them open until about 5 PM. 5-18-09 – The ice is all but gone from the lake. Very nice day for a change about 60 degrees, sunny with a light wind. 5-20-09 – The big white wolf is back on the ‘gut’ pile. Heard a wren this morning. Must have de-iced his wings to get here. Fishing still so-so. Cold and windy this AM. Suppose to warm up and rain. Emery’s are leaving today.
New group came in 5-23-09. Carl had motor trouble again! Fishing is getting better. The water temp is 42 degrees (39 to 40 on the main lake. 5-29-09 – The wolf is watching me now from about 75 yards. Some day I’ll scratch his ears. HA HA!! Fishing is good but not great. Temps still below normal. One dock is just going under water.
This week Bailey fell off the dock. First time she has been all the way in the water. Tom helped her out. She is always screwing around with something. She loves camp life. She is a good looking pup, growing, in shape and spoiled rotten!
5-31-09 – Terry’s boat plug fell out and almost sunk at the docks. Caught lot of flack from others in camp. He forgot to screw it tight, or did not know he had to………..New Boat owner!!
June 5, 2009. Rain with a little snow mixed at times this morning. Wind steady at 30 KM. Saw a yellow headed black bird this morning and another bird I couldn’t find in the bird book. The birds like the oats I’m feeding the ducks. Fishing is REALLY GOOD now. The trout are still up. No wonder, it is still cold!
Becker’s passport still isn’t here. He left without it. There is a grace period so will only get a belittling and hands slapped at the border.
6-13-09 – Turned from 50 to 80/85 degrees in one day. Stayed that hot until 6-22-09. Rained off and on today. Approx. 70 to 75 degrees. No-seeum’s came out this week. Lake is slowly going down. Dock just out of water on top.
Someone put his plug in the live-well hole on Saturday. Everyone saw it, ha ha. Had to outfit Peg and Pat. Straw hats, aloe and sunscreen. Got a great steak and a loaf of homemade bread in exchange.
Pulled my stove out this week to clean. Don’t recommend doing that without power cleaning equipment and someone to run it!
One of the Cullen boys and I were talking in the AM. He’s 20 years. Asked him if he/they
needed gas. He said no, haven’t been that far. Last night approx 9 pm Rusty Meyers called with a boat out of gas. They walked in the water from Sand Bay. Now they know every bug out there by first name.
June 28, 09 to July 4, 2009 – Rained all week except Friday. Lake cooled of approx 10 degrees. Fishing still good by camp, Sand Bay and Canoe channel. July 29th – rained all month, at least it seems that way. The lake is rising, and it could be a record cool July. Fished Harris two times last week and today. Surprised at the size of the walleye. Better size than last year. Lots of 15” to 18” fish and a few over. Nice fish!
August 30, 2009 – nothing much this month but rain again! Saw my first flock of Sandhill Cranes going south today. Got approx. 80% of the dock finished by cabin 7 today. Justin and Kyle helped. August 31, 2009 – 7 AM first frost.
September 8, 2009 - had about 8 or 9 days of nice warm to hot weather so far this month. Rain coming in the 9th. It should only be for a day or two. Fishing is still good on Harris, and not deep yet. Two different colored walleye now. Looks like some came up from the deep. September 12 – First flock (20-50) of Canadian Geese going south. September 16 – 2nd frost this AM. Not hard, but frost
September 21 - Still warm. It has been warm (75-80) and dry for the last 2 weeks. Last week more black flies than I can remember ever before. Moose Hunters in since 9-17-09. It has been too warm, nothing moving during the day. Trout fishing today – water temp at 64 degrees, there is a front moving in so not biting. Caught one trout at 60’ and 2 pike at 45’. Sturgeon Lake has been dropping for about a week now. Some dock stringers still under water. September 27, 2009 – rain and wind moving in. The lake is still dropping, and it is still warm.
September 28, 2009 – OH S _ _ _ !!!!! High winds, rain mixed with snow.
September 29 – wake up to white trees and ground. About 28 degrees. Windy. The snow was gone by noon. 45 degrees in the afternoon, cooling off tonight. It is supposed to be sunny for several days now.
October 1 – starting to turn cold and rain….sometimes mixed with snow this week. 22 to 24 degrees at night, 40 to 45 degrees during the day. October 9, blew out the last of the water lines today in #4, the laundry house and outside lines. Would have liked to use the laundry for blankets, but cold is coming and I feel better that it is all safe! Put a new pump in the well for 5 and 6, and will leave that on for the miners. They will take care of it since they plan to stay until November 15th or so.
Ivan’s group – no moose, they couldn’t hit hem.
Gord’s group – 1 bull last morning they were leaving.
Carl leaving Saturday October 10th. The boat ran acceptable! Caught lots of big pike in Jones Bay. Good walleye fishing too. Went to Harris on Wednesday and had to look for them. Caught nice fish when we found them. Hump and Rock were slow and small. Would have to shoot you if I told you were we caught them……but I can be bought!
October 10 – 8 AM about 1” of snow on the ground and still snowing. Got about 3”. Coldest fall I remember! 40 degrees for highs during the day and 25 degrees at night. October 13, first ice on trout creek this morning. October 15 – trout creek all but froze over. Had the first ice by the docks.
October 16, 2009 – no Cedar Waxwings or Robins to clean the berries from the mountain ash this fall. Not sure why.
Time to leave before I get trapped! Still openings for 2010. Thanks to everyone who made 2009 a GREAT experience.
